How the new 48-team World Cup format works

Updated for 2026 · 5 min read

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams — a 50% jump from the 32-team format used from 1998 through 2022. That means more matches (104 total, up from 64), more knockout rounds, and a slightly longer tournament window.

Group stage: 12 groups of 4

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4 teams (Groups A–L). Each team plays the other 3 in its group — 3 matches per team, 6 matches per group, 72 group-stage matches total.

The standard points system applies: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. After 3 rounds of matches, the group standings are finalized.

Who advances?

From each group, the top 2 teams advance automatically — that's 24 teams through. On top of that, the 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance, based on their points totals with tiebreakers. That brings the total to 32 knockout teams, twice as many as the previous 16.

The 8-best-third-placed rule is the most interesting new mechanic: it means third place can still be enough to qualify, as long as your group was competitive.

Knockout stage: Round of 32 through Final

The knockout bracket has 5 rounds plus a 3rd place playoff:

  • Round of 32 — 16 matches, the new first knockout round
  • Round of 16 — 8 matches
  • Quarterfinals — 4 matches
  • Semifinals — 2 matches
  • 3rd Place Playoff — 1 match
  • Final — MetLife Stadium, July 19, 2026

Tiebreakers

If teams tie on points, FIFA applies these tiebreakers in order:

  1. Goal difference across all group matches
  2. Goals scored
  3. Points in matches between tied teams
  4. Goal difference in matches between tied teams
  5. Goals scored in matches between tied teams
  6. Fair play points (yellow and red cards)
  7. FIFA ranking at the start of the tournament

Total matches and duration

All told: 72 group stage matches + 16 Round of 32 + 8 Round of 16 + 4 quarterfinals + 2 semifinals + 1 third place + 1 final = 104 matches over 39 days.
