About the 48 teams
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, a 50% increase from the 32-team format used since 1998. Hosts United States, Canada, and Mexico qualified automatically. The remaining 45 teams earned their place through continental qualifiers: 16 from UEFA, 6 from CONMEBOL, 6 from CONCACAF (incl. hosts), 9 from CAF, 8 from AFC, and 1 from OFC, with 2 additional slots decided by intercontinental playoffs.
